New energy system will provide 100 percent of all steam and approximately 75 percent of electricity to the 252-acre campus using the latest, environmentally friendly technology.

Montclair, NJ, October 26, 2012– Montclair State University and Energenic-US, LLC held a building dedication and beam signing ceremony to celebrate the construction of a combined heating, cooling, and power (CHCP) facility on the Montclair State campus.  The construction of the CHCP plant facility is part of a modernized Montclair District Energy System currently under development on the campus.  Construction of the new facility and system is being undertaken by a $90 million public-private partnership facilitated by the 2009 New Jersey Economic Stimulus Act and will generate an estimated 400 construction jobs.

Senator Raymond J. Lesniak, Assemblyman Thomas P. Giblin, Assemblyman Albert Coutinho, Montclair State University President Susan A. Cole, and Energenic President and CEO Frank E. DiCola signed a 20-foot steel beam at the event which took place on Friday, October 26 on the University campus.

The CHCP project is being developed by Energenic-US, LLC, a long-term partnership between DCO Energy LLC and Marina Energy LLC, which is a subsidiary of South Jersey Industries (NYSE:SJI).

The state-of-the art CHCP facility is Montclair State’s second public-private partnership – and only the third one statewide – and it will provide the campus with environmentally-friendly, cost-effective, energy-efficient, and more reliable delivery of heating, cooling, and electrical services.

Consistently designated a “Green College” by The Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges since its first release in 2010, Montclair State is dedicated to producing and delivering environmentally responsible energy services, which also includes solar energy at both its main campus and its New Jersey School of Conservation campus in Stoke Forest.

“I cannot overstate the importance of this project, which is a natural—and necessary— step in continuing the enormous development that has taken place at the University over the past 14 years,” said Montclair State University president Susan A. Cole.“And I am proud to say that the new project embodies the University’s commitment to environmental stewardship by delivering clean, cost-effective and energy-efficient power and thermal services.”

The 18-month construction project, which will employ approximately 400 workers, will be completed by November 2013. The new CHCP plant will provide the campus with natural gas-fired electric generation, chilled water for air-conditioning, and steam for heating via a new four-pipe underground energy distribution system. It will meet most campus electricity requirements via onsite energy generation activities that will continuously produce 5.7 megawatts of power.

The CHCP facility is the University’s second public-private partnership. The Heights, New Jersey’s largest on-campus residence and dining complex, was the first public-private construction project to be developed under the State’s 2009 Economic Stimulus Act. Completed in 2011, this award-winning $211 million project employed 1,350 workers during its construction.  Today, The Heights houses nearly 2,000 additional resident students on the Montclair State campus and it accommodates the housing needs of students enrolling from across the state, including southern New Jersey, as well as nationally and internationally.
