University Named to 2013 President’s Higher Education Honor Roll

University Recognized for Commitment to Community Service

Montclair State University has been named to the 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). The annual honor roll is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. This is the second time the University has received this prestigious award since it was launched in 2006.

Montclair State joins a total of just 690 leading institutions of higher learning from across the nation that were singled out for their exceptional commitment to community service by the CNCS at the American Council on Education’s 95th Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. on March 4, 2013.

In order to be named to the Honor Roll,  schools must demonstrate relevant and meaningful service that measurably impacts in their communities. In 2012 alone, according to a Volunteering and Civic Life in America report, 3.1 million college students collectively provided more than 118 million hours of service nationwide.

“We are proud of this national recognition for Montclair State’s outstanding performance in co-curricular and curricular community service and volunteerism,” says Bryan D. Murdock, the University’s Director of Service-Learning and Community Engagement. “This honor reflects our commitment to preparing students to be productive and engaged citizens of society.”

The 2013 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll includes five college and university Presidential Awardees. Of the 690 Honor Roll members, 113 were named to the Distinction list.
