Montclair State’s World’s Fair: a Celebration of Cultures

International food, music and performances highlight annual cultural celebration

The Montclair State University community turned out in force on April 18 for international food, music, performances and a chance to learn about other cultures at the annual celebration of cultural diversity, the World’s Fair.

Nearly 50 campus organizations and student groups participated in the event, setting up tables in front of the Student Center. The groups set up displays, handed out literature and answered questions about their countries and cultures. Many also offered samples of international foods—always a highlight of the World’s Fair. The exotic smells coming from the food stations served to draw even more people to the festivities and kept those working at the tables busy.

Along with all the food and displays, the fair featured live performances of cultural music and dance, as well as a DJ and other entertainment. Some groups demonstrated regional crafts or held activities at their tables, such as the members of Hillel, the Jewish Student Union, who offered visitors two pieces of candy and asked them to guess which one was kosher.

Adding to the international flavor of the fair were the many students who dressed in the traditional clothing of their countries of origin and the wide variety of languages being spoken by enthusiastic participants.
